Russian Literature

I have an announcement: I'm going back to school!  In hopes of being accepted to a Master of Education program, I'm completing a prerequisite: Russian literature.  The prerequisite is technically any course that is non-American, non-British literature and I chose Russian literature.  I start tomorrow!  Here's a look at what I'll be reading:
Cancer Ward, by Solzhenitsyn.  I'm sad to say I know nothing about this, but rest assured that my lack of knowledge will be cured shortly!
Tolstoy's Short Fiction. I've just finished rereading Anna Karinena, and I'm excited to read some of Tolstoy's shorter works.
The Master and Margarita, by Bulgakov.  This is one I'm really looking forward to!
The Portable Chekhov, because some Chekhov is just too heavy to carry around with you.
Doctor Zhivago, by Pasternak.  This is another book that I feel like I should have read by now, but haven't.  I'm excited to finally start it!

Have you read any of these?  Any reviews? :)

  2. Ooh, I'd love to hear what you think of Tolstoy's shorter works. I loved Anna Karenina, but geez it took me forever to read!

Maybe a trip to Russia will be in order after you finish all of these?! :)

  4. I agree with Annie, congrats on going back to school. That's a big deal. You've picked some heavy duty reading!

I've always wanted to read Dr. Zhivago. I loved the movie. The only Russian literature I've read was Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment". That was really hard to get through. All those Russian names were hard to keep straight in my head.

    Good luck.

  7. I don't remember too much of it but I remember just loving Master and Margarita! What about Notes from Underground? That's pretty short. And there's always The Brothers Karamazov if you want something super heavy...

    1. I have started, and failed to finish Brothers Karamazov more times than I care to admit. :) maybe this course will give me a better understanding (and ability to finally finish it!).

  9. Ok, Holly since I am Russian (hope you know:-) you are my hero now!
Master and Margarita is my favorite. It is very deep, but genius. Looking back, when I was growing up, I was more concentrating in reading French, American and English classic books. I regret now, Russian literature is amazing. Good luck and and I am looking forward to hear what you think.
